Convert an archive between ZIP, 7z, TAR, and GZ formats without uploading it.
Visit makemyzip.com/convert-archive. The source format is detected automatically from the file you drop.
Drag a ZIP, 7z, TAR, or GZ file onto the dropzone. Nothing uploads — both extraction and re-packing happen locally.
Choose ZIP, 7z, TAR, or TAR.GZ as the destination. The original archive is left untouched.
The tool extracts the source in memory and re-packs into the new format. Folder structure is preserved.
File contents and folder structure are preserved exactly. Format-specific metadata (e.g. Unix permissions on TAR) is best-effort because not every format records the same fields.
Not directly. Decrypt first with Unlock ZIP, then convert the plaintext result. We never re-encrypt automatically because that requires asking for a new password.
Different formats use different compression algorithms. 7z (LZMA2) usually beats ZIP (DEFLATE) on text and source code. TAR alone is uncompressed and will be larger.
Limited only by your browser’s available memory. Multi-gigabyte conversions work on a desktop with enough RAM but can stall on mobile.
Combine multiple archives into a single file. Handle filename conflicts automatically.
Split a large archive into smaller, independently-openable parts.
Drop an existing ZIP and new files, get back a merged ZIP with rename, overwrite, or skip for conflicts.
